Sar Sokha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, urged sub-national authorities to provide more opportunities for capable women to be given roles and responsibilities, and the selection process should be done transparently.
On the occasion of celebrating International Women’s Day, on March 8, under the theme “Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for All Women and Girls” on March 6, 2025, Sokha said that within the Ministry of Interior, although the number of women currently working or holding leadership positions is higher than in other ministries and institutions, this number still does not meet the so-called gender equality.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that at the same time, all units under the ministry must review any job roles that do not pose a challenge to women during their work, so women should be given priority to hold those positions or roles because, in some situations, women are more gentle or better than men, especially in locations providing direct services to citizens.
Sokha added that in some sub-national jobs, such as one window service, women can also work there. In this regard, the relevant departments under the ministry should help consider whether they can be given roles in leading organisations. However, before giving them roles, they must undergo at least two years of training.
He highlighted that currently, although women’s values have been promoted and they have been given equal rights as men, they still face some challenges, such as the case of migration, because some Cambodian women have suffered from abuse, labour, or sexual exploitation. Therefore, all units of the ministry that work on migration and immigration issues must strengthen education for citizens to receive more information about the risks of migration, especially on the countries they want to go to work in.
