The Pursat Provincial Department of Environment issued a public clarification refuting a news report published by the Thai media outlet www.nationthailand.com.
The online article, dated 11 February 2025, claimed that a wildfire originating in Cambodia had spread to the Banthat Mountain range in Thailand’s Trat province, triggering landmine explosions.
The Pursat Department of Environment unequivocally rejected this report as false. The department clarified that the image used by www.nationthailand.com to illustrate the story is, in fact, a picture of a wildfire in Thailand, not Cambodia.
While a minor grass fire involving thatch grass and reeds did occur in Thmada commune, Veal Veng district, Pursat province, the department emphasised that the location was devoid of dense forest or large trees, contrary to the Thai news report’s depiction.
Local authorities in Pursat province swiftly intervened and contained the fire, preventing it from spreading and ensuring no harm to human life, wildlife, or biodiversity in the area.
The department stressed that the wildfire in the Banthat Mountain range in Trat province, Thailand, is unrelated to Cambodia, contradicting the aforementioned online publication.
The Royal Government of Cambodia, particularly the Ministry of Environment and local authorities, remained highly vigilant regarding wildfires and are committed to preventing such incidents from escalating and endangering the well-being of Cambodian citizens. Fresh News
