On January 5, 2025, the Cambodian Embassy in Japan hosted a ceremony to mark the 46th anniversary of January 7 Victory Day, a historic moment commemorating the country’s liberation from the Khmer Rouge regime. The event, presided over by Cambodian Ambassador Tuy Ry, gathered more than 100 attendees, including members of the Cambodian community, students, interns, and skilled workers living and working in Japan.
Ambassador Tuy Ry began the ceremony by emphasising the profound significance of January 7, 1979, which he described as the “second birthday” of the Cambodian people. He reflected on how this pivotal day marked the end of the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal regime and paved the way for Cambodia to rebuild itself from the devastation of that era.
The ambassador highlighted the progress Cambodia has achieved over the decades, attributing much of this success to the leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen and the implementation of his “Win-Win Policy.” This policy, he noted, permanently ended the country’s civil war on December 29, 1998, leading to national unity, peace, and stability.
The event included a video presentation that recounted Cambodia’s journey from the dark days of the Khmer Rouge to its current development milestones. The video showcased the nation’s remarkable transformation, including its social, economic, and cultural advancements.
Ambassador Tuy Ry also discussed the accomplishments of the Royal Government of Cambodia under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, highlighting the nation’s sustained peace, political stability, sovereignty, and rapid economic growth across various sectors.
He underscored Cambodia’s growing role on the international stage, referencing the successful organisation of numerous significant national and international events in 2024, including the “Celebrate Cambodia” festival held on December 31. These events, he noted, not only highlighted Cambodia’s capabilities but also reinforced its image as a vibrant and resilient nation.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Tuy Ry encouraged Cambodians living in Japan to actively promote Cambodian culture, traditions, and achievements to a broader international audience. He stressed the importance of showcasing Cambodia’s positive image to inspire greater interest in the country and attract more international visitors.
